About 70% of the state’s nearly 1,200 fire departments are volunteer departments or have some kind of volunteer component to them. Over the past several years, these departments have seen declining volunteer numbers, while also facing an increase in calls. By becoming a volunteer firefighter, you can help serve and protect the community you live in.
The need for volunteer firefighters is great not just in Ohio, but across the nation. By becoming a volunteer, you have the opportunity to serve your neighbors and the community you live in.
You will also meet lifelong friends and colleagues, all while making a positive impact in your community.
While individual department requirements may vary, to become a certified volunteer firefighter in Ohio, you need to complete a 36- hour State of Ohio Certified Volunteer Firefighter Course.
Training at the State Fire Mashal’s Ohio Fire Academy is free for volunteer fire firefighters.
Yes! Many volunteer firefighters come to the volunteer fire service with no prior experience. Through your department, training center, and the Ohio Fire Academy, you can get all of the training you need for free. Many departments are also in need of volunteers for non-emergency response rolls as well.
